What is exactly the job of an occupant on an aerial work platform? The most important thing is to stay safe and not distract the operator when the aerial work platform is in motion.
Good to know if you are an aerial work platform occupant
Focus points:
- Only enter the platform when required for the work activity.
- Only enter or exit the platform when instructed by the operator.
- Assess the area before entering and exiting the platform.
- Enter and exit the platform correctly using three points of contact and facing the AWP.
- Always keep your hands and feet inside the platform until all AWP functions have completely stopped.
- Be prepared for any sudden movements while the AWP is in motion.
- Stay alert to potential pinch hazards when holding on to the guardrails.
- When a harness and lanyard is required, secure your lanyard to the designated anchor point as instructed by the operator.
- Follow any other instructions given by the operator.
As an occupant, you should be aware of everything happening around you. Confirm that the operator has a valid operator certification, e.g. IPAF or CACES, with the category for the operated machine they are operating and assist when directed by the Nominated Ground Rescue Person(s) during a rescue.
Remember to:
- Maintain clear communications with the AWP operator.
- Follow the directions given by the AWP operator.
- Alert the AWP operator to hazards they might have missed.
- Do not interfere with the controls.
- Do not distract the AWP operator while the AWP is in motion.
- Be aware of your environment.
- Be aware of the rescue plan before entering the platform.
- Know the maximum number of occupants and overall load as specified by the AWP manufacturer.
